Open Letter to the European Commission President Regarding North Macedonian Citizenship Applications
Dear Ms. Ursula von der Leyen,
I am writing to you today on behalf of hundreds of thousands of individuals of Macedonian descent, living predominantly in Türkiye and various other countries, who have legally applied for North Macedonian citizenship based on their familial ties. We are reaching out to you, Ms. von der Leyen, because we have been tirelessly navigating complex bureaucratic processes, enduring long waits at state institutions in North Macedonia, and repeatedly receiving the same unsatisfactory responses from consulates for many years.
Our applications, which are based on legitimate historical and familial connections to North Macedonia, have been languishing for an unacceptably long time. This protracted delay in processing citizenship applications is causing significant distress and hardship for countless families. It effectively denies us our legal right to citizenship and hinders our ability to fully connect with our ancestral homeland.
We believe that the slow pace of these procedures by the North Macedonian authorities is a matter that warrants the attention and support of the European Union, particularly given its commitment to human rights, rule of law, and good governance within its candidate countries. As individuals seeking to exercise our legal rights, we feel let down by the current situation.
Your support in this matter would be invaluable to us. We earnestly hope that the European Union, under your esteemed leadership, will intervene and urge the North Macedonian government to expedite these long-pending citizenship applications. Our collective hope is that the European Union will advocate for our fundamental human rights and help us overcome these protracted bureaucratic obstacles.
We are confident that if you were to publicly acknowledge and address this issue, it would significantly impact the resolution of these long-standing delays. We are reaching out to you as a beacon of hope, and we believe that your intervention can bring about a much-needed resolution for hundreds of thousands of individuals who are eagerly awaiting their rightful recognition as citizens of North Macedonia.
